This cloud forest area to the south of Lake Arenal saw its first influx of settlers in the early fifties, by a band of Alabama Quakers looking to leave the US and its war with Korea. Now it is a major destination for tourists, who enjoy ziplines and canopy tours, a butterfly farm, multiple nature preserves, and the best ice cream in the southern hemisphere (created by descendants of those early Quakers, in the Monteverde Cheese Factory).
